Week of October 29th

First Grade Families,
We are looking forward to a fun-filled and busy week ahead. Wednesday October 31st will be our Literary Character Day celebration. Please ensure that you have cleared your child's character with his or her teacher. Friday November 2nd we will have our culminating assembly for the read-a-thon, we encourage you to continue to log minutes and collect donations. A gentle reminder that dismissal is at 12:30 on Friday as teachers will be attending in-service workshops.

Literature
Poem recitation will be this week. Please continue to practice The Swing at home. We will continue with our fairy tales unit this week. We will read and discuss Rapunzel and The Frog Prince. We will also be celebrating literature and reading on Wednesday the 31st with exciting activities in class.

Math
This week we will continue in unit 6. We will be adding two one digit numbers to make a sum greater than ten. We will practice breaking numbers apart to make ten as well as exploring the different strategies we can use to add. We will introduce subtraction within 20. Please continue to practice math facts at home nightly.

Science
This week we continue to learn about habitats through exploration of the saltwater and ocean habitats.

History
The Maya developed large cities in the rainforests of Mexico and Central America many years ago. Extended family was very important to the Mayans. We will learn more about this culture and civilization through realistic fiction read-alouds, discussion and journaling.
