Week of October 30th

Many exciting things are happening in first grade this week!

Tuesday 10/31 is character day. You should have received approval for your child's costume from me on the green slip of paper by now. If you still have questions please reach out to me via email. I am so excited to see everyone dressed as their favorite literary characters! We have a fun afternoon planned and hope you are able to join in the fun or donate supplies. Friday November 3rd is early release at 12:30 for teacher inservice, please plan accordingly.

This week we will be looking at hieroglyphics and how the ancient Egyptians used this to read and write. We will also learn about the duties of a scribe.

Math:
We will continue to learn about shapes.

Week of October 23rd

I hope that you have all had a relaxing break. I have really enjoyed meeting with all of you during Parent Teacher Conferences. If you have not had the opportunity to meet with me and have not already arranged a time please reach out to me via email to set up a conference.

The Read-A-Thon is still going on. We encourage your children to continue reading and interacting with the online system. We will end the Read-A-Thon with character day on October 31st. Permission slips have been sent home and need to come back to school to receive approval from me. All characters should come from classical literature.

The fall concert is coming up on November 16th. This event is part of your child's music grade. The concert will be at Higley Center for the Perform Arts at 4132 E Pecos Road. The concert begins at 5:30 and first graders need to arrive by 5:00. Girls should wear a black skirt, black tights, black dress shoes and a white top. Hair should be pulled back. Boys should wear black pants, white dress shirt, black dress shoes and black socks, hair should be neat.

This week we are diving back into curriculum:

Spalding:

Please focus on the first 50 phonograms. The ones that will be tested will be noted on the homework sheet.

Math:We are wrapping up our unit with addition and subtraction to 20 and will test at the end of the week.

Science:
We are beginning to explore habitats

History:
We are still studying ancient Egypt and will wrap this unit up at the end of October. We are learning about the sphinx. For our activity this week your child will need to bring in a picture of his or her face to glue onto the body of the sphinx.

Week of October 2nd

It has been such a pleasure serving you and your children this first quarter, it truly has flown by! Please remember that the Read-A-Thon is going on for the month of October. All proceeds will fund the library, and there are so many fun incentives for your children, we greatly appreciate your participation in this exciting event. The book fair will be held in the library this week. Your children may purchase books before or after school or during their regularly scheduled library time. Due to the book fair children will NOT be checking out library books this week, but are encouraged to return any checked out items during this time. A gentle reminder that Friday is a half day and children will be dismissed at 12:30. We hope you all enjoy a safe and fun fall break!
