First Grade Families,
We are looking forward to a fun-filled and busy week ahead. Wednesday October 31st will be our Literary Character Day celebration. Please ensure that you have cleared your child's character with his or her teacher. Friday November 2nd we will have our culminating assembly for the read-a-thon, we encourage you to continue to log minutes and collect donations. A gentle reminder that dismissal is at 12:30 on Friday as teachers will be attending in-service workshops.

Literature
Poem recitation will be this week. Please continue to practice The Swing at home. We will continue with our fairy tales unit this week. We will read and discuss Rapunzel and The Frog Prince. We will also be celebrating literature and reading on Wednesday the 31st with exciting activities in class.
Math
This week we will continue in unit 6. We will be adding two one digit numbers to make a sum greater than ten. We will practice breaking numbers apart to make ten as well as exploring the different strategies we can use to add. We will introduce subtraction within 20. Please continue to practice math facts at home nightly.
Science
This week we continue to learn about habitats through exploration of the saltwater and ocean habitats.
History
The Maya developed large cities in the rainforests of Mexico and Central America many years ago. Extended family was very important to the Mayans. We will learn more about this culture and civilization through realistic fiction read-alouds, discussion and journaling.

First Grade Families,
Second quarter is in full swing, and full of fun activities! Just a reminder to get your child's concert clothes now. Attire guidelines are posted on Mrs. Boswell's blog as well as our last blog post. The read-a-thon continues, keep reading and logging those minutes to win cool prizes. Approval slips for Character Day costumes have been sent home. Please look for the slip approving your choice. Pop culture will not be permitted. Please make arrangements for half-day on Friday, November 2nd for teacher in-service.

Literature
This week we continue our Fairy Tales unit. We will focus on story elements, comprehension and retelling important events. Our stories this week include Sleeping Beauty, Rumplestiltskin and Hansel and Gretel.
Math
This week we will learn about the base ten system for writing numbers, focusing on numbers to twenty. We will compare numbers and add two, one digit numbers to equal sums greater than ten. Unit 6 test will be this Thursday. Monday and Tuesday we will work through our continual assessment in order to evaluate each child's progress thus far.
History
We are working through our Early Civilizations unit. Last week we put seeds in baggies to sprout, as we looked at farming and its role in early civilizations. We will learn about the Aztecs, Incas and Mayas this week and identify them on a map. In addition we will create an Aztec calendar. Scholars will learn about the contributions of each of these civilizations and track the progress of their lima bean as it begins to sprout and grow.
Science
Our habitat unit continues this week with an up close look at the wetlands. Scholars will explain the characteristics of the wetlands and create an informational beaver flip book about this habitat.

First Grade Families,
We hope that you all had a relaxing and fun fall break! We enjoyed meeting with you during fall conferences. The Read-a-Thon will continue through the end of the month so keep logging those minutes! Our culminating event will be on Literacy Day, October 31st. Scholars will be able to dress as their favorite character in literature. All characters must be approved by your child's teacher and will be subject to guidelines. Pop-culture will not be permitted.
Larry Kerby's Love and Logic seminar is this Thursday evening. Childcare is provided.
Clubs will begin next week, early dismissal is at 12:30 Wednesday, October 17th.
***Please join us in celebrating the accomplishments of our headmaster, Dr. Toyin Atolagbe! This weekend Mrs. Atolagbe will be receiving her Doctorate in Education from Grand Canyon University. If you would like to write her a note of congratulations, please send your family letter/note to your child's teacher no later than THIS FRIDAY, October 19th. We will collect the letters and present them to her in a gift box after her ceremony this weekend. Thank you for taking the time to celebrate Dr. Atolagbe's accomplishments with us!

Regarding Fall Concert:

Believe it or not, the fourth annual, mandatory Archway Lincoln Fall Concert is fast approaching. It will be held on
Thursday, November 15th
at the
Higley Center for the Performing Arts
4132 E. Pecos Road Gilbert, AZ 85295.
The K-2 concert will be 5:30-6:30 p.m. with students arriving at 5:00 p.m.
Attire for concerts is as follows:
Boys: White dress shirt, black pants, black dress shoes, and black socks. Hair should be combed neatly.
Girls: White top, black skirt (black tights optional), or black dress pants, and black dress shoes. Hair should be styled neatly.
