This week we begin to learn about Modern Mexico. We will discuss the three cultures that make up modern Mexico. We will also discover the meaning of the colors in the flag of Mexico as well as the origin of last names in Mexican culture. This week scholars will describe the early years of Sacagawea and explain how she helped the Lewis and Clark Expedition. We will review and test on our Exploring the West unit. We begin reading Lewis and Clark and Me a book from the perspective of Meriwether Lewis's dog.

The K-2 concert will be 5:30-6:30 p.m. with students arriving at 5:15 p.m.

The 3-5 concert will be 7-8 p.m. with students arriving at 6:45 p.m.

Attire for concerts is as follows:

Boys: White dress shirt, black pants, black dress shoes, and black socks. Hair should be combed neatly.

Girls: White top, black skirt (black tights optional), or black dress pants, and black dress shoes. Hair should be styled neatly.

Week of March 18th

I hope you have all had a relaxing and fun Spring Break! It is hard to believe that I only have a short nine weeks left with your children. This is always a bittersweet time for me. It has been a pleasure witnessing the emotional and academic growth of each child these past three quarters and it saddens me to think of them heading upstairs to bigger and better things. I am looking forward to finishing this year strong and am so grateful for everything you have done to make this possible.

Week of January 21st

Coming up in First Grade
Wednesday, January 23rd is our school wide writing day. As a school wide initiative to practice the beauty and art of writing, we will host a Lincoln Writes Day. This is an opportunity enjoy writing as a whole class. It is not an instructional time, but rather a time for teachers and students to pause and enjoy the process of writing.

This year we will be having a school-wide Spring Festival will be held on April 13^th in the afternoon.  It will consist of multiple inflatables/slides/bounce houses, games, face painting, food trucks, entertainment, and class booths.  Volunteers will be needed from every class.  We are hoping that this becomes a great community building event for our school and families. Our theme this year is a celebration of culture and we are in charge of choosing a country from Europe to represent with our booth with 1B.  What we need is 1-2 parents to be the head contact and lead for each class and booth. If you are interested please reach out to me this week so I can get you more information.

First Grade Families,
We had a great week back together! We want to thank you all for taking the time to come in and meet with us for Winter Conferences. Please note that we will be observing Civil Rights Day on Monday January 21st and there will be no school. We are looking forward to a  busy week ahead:

This week will begin the final book in our Frog and Toad series, Frog and Toad All Year. We will continue to analyze story elements and will summarize each chapter.

Grammar:
We have been working hard all year to construct complete sentences across our curriculum. This week will use this knowledge to learn what makes a good topic sentence and will practice writing it as a class. We will review nouns, verbs and adjectives.

Math:
We will compare numbers as we continue to explore place value. We will add and subtract ones and tens without regrouping.

Science:
We really enjoyed learning about the animals studied during project week. We had a walk through with our first graders and were able to admire the posters in each classroom. This week we will begin learning about the human body. We will learn that our biggest organ is our skin and we will explore the different organs in the body.

History:
Last week we learned about the lost colony of Roanoke Island and that this attempt by England to settle in the Americas was unsuccessful. This week we will learn about Jamestown and how Pocahontas helped the settlers. As we explore her story we will differentiate between the parts that happened and others that had been made up.

Welcome back first grade families! We hope you all enjoyed your time off with your little ones. It is so hard to believe that we are already half way through first grade and a week into 2019! I am looking forward to all that lies ahead, and this week am feeling grateful to welcome routine back into my life.
